What inspectors found
This report summarises the findings of a recent inspection of Kettlewell House Nursing Home, conducted by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection aimed to assess the overall quality of care and safety provided at the home, with a particular focus on improvements following a previous inspection under a different provider. The report details the findings across five key areas, offering insights into the home’s performance and the experiences of its residents.
In terms of how safe the care is, residents generally feel secure, with staff aware of individual risks and how to manage them. Measures are in place to prevent harm, including appropriate equipment and robust health and safety checks. Infection control practices were found to be effective, and lessons are learned from any incidents to improve practices. Staff are well-trained in safeguarding, and any concerns are appropriately notified and investigated. While medication management is generally good, there was a noted issue with the temperature of medicine trolleys on the ground floor, which the management assured they would address.
Regarding how effective the care is, residents' outcomes are consistently good. Improvements have been made to the environment, making it more suitable for residents' needs, and personal rooms are well-decorated and equipped. Staff are supported with good training, including specific training on mental health, and regular supervision. The home operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring consent is sought and that decisions are made in residents' best interests. Residents are provided with sufficient food and drink, with choices and variety.

Relatives are very happy with the care provided to their family members and feel their views are heard.
Concerning how responsive the service is, residents' needs are assessed and met with person-centred care plans that develop over time. Staff are readily available and residents do not experience long waits for support. The home also provides opportunities for residents to participate in activities they enjoy and offers good food. Relatives are kept informed and involved in their family members' care.
On how well-led the service is, the registered manager is highly praised for their knowledge and oversight. The management team has effective governance arrangements in place to monitor quality and safety, and they collaborate well with external agencies. However, the provider operator had failed to support the registered manager by making some necessary improvements to carpeted areas in the service, which represents an area for future development.
