Inspected 25 March 2021 · report published 14 April 2021What inspectors found
Woking Homes provides comfortable residential care for up to 51 retired railway personnel, their families, and other local residents, including individuals living with dementia. Located entirely on the ground floor for easy accessibility, the home creates a welcoming community atmosphere. The recent inspection highlighted a strong commitment to person-centred care, clean facilities, and a supportive environment where residents feel genuinely safe, respected, and happy with the daily life provided.
Residents consistently reported feeling safe and protected from harm, supported by thorough staff recruitment, reliable health and safety checks, and proper medicine management. However, the report noted that routine environmental checks in bedrooms previously missed potential hazards such as blocked pathways or call bell functionality, which management agreed to incorporate into monthly audits. Additionally, a few residents mentioned that occasional reliance on agency staff could impact care consistency, though permanent recruitment efforts were underway.
Care delivery remained effective through comprehensive needs assessments, an on-site training room, and regular staff development. Meals were freshly cooked on-site with high food hygiene standards, and while daily menu choices were available, the home planned to improve visual prompts for residents who struggle with verbal communication. Staff demonstrated a strong understanding of consent and mental capacity, though two care plans required clearer documentation regarding whether specific individuals had the capacity to make certain decisions.
Staff built warm, compassionate relationships with residents and their families, ensuring that personal privacy, dignity, and independence were actively promoted. This respectful approach extended to compassionate end-of-life care and daily routines that allowed residents to exercise personal choice freely.
The home offered a varied social and leisure schedule, featuring meaningful activities tailored for individuals living with dementia and unique touches reflecting the home's railway heritage, such as a replica train carriage reminiscence display. The single-level layout allowed for easy movement, and ongoing improvements included extending the dining area and planning more dementia-friendly signage.
Leadership was described as approachable and effective, with robust quality assurance systems in place to monitor safety and drive continuous improvements. Management actively listened to feedback from residents, relatives, and staff members, ensuring the service continually learns from incidents and adapts to better meet the needs of everyone living there.
