What inspectors found

King Edward House is a small residential care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to five older adults with learning disabilities. Set in a large house with a private garden in a residential area, the home offers a welcoming, clean, and well-adapted environment where residents have personalised their own bedrooms and shared spaces. The inspection highlighted a warm, person-centred atmosphere with a dedicated team, though the home is currently transitioning to new, easy-read care plans, which the manager notes will take time to fully complete to ensure residents are thoroughly involved.

Residents are protected from abuse, and staff clearly understand how to identify and report concerns. Medicines are managed safely, risk assessments are thorough, and health and safety checks on the environment, such as fire alarm tests and utility servicing, are up to date. Staffing levels are sufficient to meet needs safely, and pre-employment checks are properly carried out for new team members.

Staff receive relevant training, supervisions, and yearly appraisals, ensuring they have the skills needed for their roles. New employees complete a proper induction, and residents are supported to eat and drink safely, maintain their health, and access healthcare professionals when necessary.

The home fosters a positive, relaxed atmosphere where staff treat residents with kindness, respect, and compassion. Privacy and independence are actively promoted, with residents encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible, such as cleaning their rooms, folding laundry, and helping in the kitchen.

Care plans are personalised and detailed, covering life history, personal care needs, and communication preferences using pictures and easy-read formats. Residents are regularly involved in reviewing their care, participating in monthly meetings, choosing activities, and going out regularly or taking holidays, while their right to stay at home and relax is also fully respected.

The service is managed by a committed and passionate registered manager who knows residents well and spends meaningful one-to-one time with them. The home undergoes regular audits covering medications, safety, and care plans, and staff report feeling exceptionally well-supported and proud to work there.
