What inspectors found

Maple House provides care for up to six individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs. This unannounced inspection in July 2017 reviewed the service following previous concerns, finding that improvements had been made in key areas. The report outlines the service's performance across five crucial domains, offering families insight into the quality of care provided.

Regarding the safety of the environment and care, residents reported feeling safe, and relatives confirmed their confidence in the service. Medicines are now managed securely with thorough record-keeping and regular audits. Risks to individuals have been assessed and managed to promote independence while ensuring safety. Robust recruitment practices are in place, and staffing levels are consistently sufficient to meet residents' needs, with staff feeling they have enough time to support people effectively. Premises and equipment are well-maintained, and emergency plans are in place.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive induction and ongoing training relevant to residents' needs, including specific courses on autism and epilepsy. Regular supervision and appraisals support staff development. Communication with residents is personalised, with clear guidance in place to understand individual needs and preferences. The service adheres to the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring residents' rights are protected and their capacity to make decisions is assessed. Health needs are closely monitored, and external healthcare professionals are involved when necessary, with residents supported to attend appointments.

The service's caring approach is evident in the positive relationships staff have built with residents and their families. Staff are described as kind, compassionate, and respectful, treating everyone with dignity. Residents appear content and engaged with staff, contributing to a warm and homely atmosphere. There is a clear person-centred culture, with care plans reflecting individuals' unique backgrounds, preferences, and aspirations.

Responsiveness to individual needs is highlighted through detailed and personalised care records that guide staff effectively. Residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and social events, reflecting their choices and interests. Both residents and their relatives know how to raise concerns or complaints and feel that their feedback is valued and acted upon.

Finally, the service is well-led. Records are accurate, well-organised, and securely stored. Regular audits and checks are conducted, effectively identifying areas for improvement. Feedback from residents, relatives, and staff is actively sought and used to drive service enhancements. Staff feel well-supported in their roles and clear about their responsibilities, with the registered manager demonstrating strong oversight and engagement with the inspection process.
