This summary provides an overview of the CQC inspection report for The Cherries, focusing on key areas of care. The report assesses how well the service supports people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals, ensuring they receive respectful, dignified, and independent lives with access to their communities. The findings offer insight into the daily experiences of residents and the operational standards of the home.
In terms of safety, while the service has effective infection control measures and staff are trained to safeguard residents from abuse, there were noted issues with medication management. Specifically, guidance for 'when required' medicines was unclear and inaccurate in some instances, and medication records were not always precise. Additionally, systems for assessing and mitigating risks to health and welfare required improvement, which indicated a risk of harm.
Regarding effectiveness, the care, treatment, and support provided consistently achieved good outcomes and promoted a high quality of life for residents. Needs were assessed comprehensively, and support plans were in place to help people learn new skills. Residents were well-supported with their nutrition and hydration, and their bedrooms were personalised to reflect their individuality.
The service was found to be caring, with staff creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Residents were treated with kindness and compassion, and staff showed genuine fondness and respect for them. Staff were adept at understanding and meeting emotional needs, and ensuring privacy, dignity, and independence were maintained.
In terms of responsiveness, the service demonstrated a good understanding of individual communication styles and actively involved residents in decisions about their care, respecting their wishes and choices. This included accommodating requests for specific activities and ensuring residents could express their needs, even when using non-verbal cues.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, while staff turnover was low and people's wishes were central to care planning, there were areas needing improvement. The report highlighted a need for more consistent goal-setting in support plans and better development plans for staff to follow. The provider is taking action to address these points.
