What inspectors found

Meadway Court is a residential care home located in Bramhall, Stockport, that provides personal care for up to 42 older people, many of whom are living with dementia. The home features accommodation across two floors with a mix of single bedrooms and communal areas. This official report highlights several areas requiring attention, particularly regarding management oversight, safety checks, and the consistency of daily care practices, alongside positive feedback about the newly appointed manager and the welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

The home faced challenges with safety, as medicines were not always managed safely, and certain environmental checks and equipment settings, such as air-flow mattresses and call bells, needed closer monitoring. Additionally, infection control practices were occasionally inconsistent, and staffing levels and deployment sometimes left staff feeling rushed and unable to fully meet everyone's needs.

Support was not always effective in daily routines, with some residents lacking appropriate access to drinks, specialized cutlery, or timely dietary updates in their care plans. Staff received relevant training and inductions, though practical oversight and adherence to good practice guidance varied.

Despite these operational hurdles, the atmosphere was notably caring, with residents and relatives speaking generally positively about the staff and reporting that they felt happy and well-supported by the people looking after them. There were no restrictions on friends and family visiting, and visitors were observed enjoying their time with residents during the inspection.

Care was not always fully responsive to individual needs, as care plans sometimes lacked up-to-date person-centred details, and some staff were unfamiliar with specific support requirements. Group activities were available, but records did not always show how residents who preferred to stay in their rooms were supported to engage in meaningful pastimes.

The service lacked a permanent registered manager at the time of the inspection, and internal audits and checks had not always driven timely improvements or caught shortfalls. However, a new manager had recently started, and both staff and families expressed positive feedback about their leadership and proactive approach to driving necessary changes.
