What inspectors found

Moorhouse Nursing Home in Hindhead provides nursing and personal care for older people, including those living with dementia, physical disabilities, and complex medical needs. This recent inspection report highlights significant challenges across the service, particularly regarding leadership, staffing, and environmental safety. While residents and their families generally praise the kindness of care staff and the kitchen team's attention to dietary needs, systemic issues in management and oversight have directly impacted the overall quality of daily life and care delivery at the home.

When looking at safety, the service struggled with managing risks effectively, as delays in personal care and hygiene management left residents vulnerable to pressure sores and discomfort. Cleanliness standards across the home were poor during the visits, with cluttered communal areas, stained carpets, and chaotic storage of protective equipment. Additionally, the heavy reliance on agency nurses and insufficient staff deployment meant residents often faced long waits for assistance, calls for help, and late administration of pain relief, though staff recruitment itself followed proper background checks.

In terms of effectiveness, the home fell short after recently expanding its care to include people with dementia, as neither the physical environment nor staff training had been sufficiently adapted to meet these complex needs. Staff also lacked a clear understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, meaning residents were not always supported to make decisions in the least restrictive way possible. On the positive side, kitchen staff demonstrated a strong awareness of individual dietary requirements and managed diabetes care well.

Regarding the caring aspect, residents and their families consistently reported that care staff treated them with genuine kindness, respect, and empathy. Kitchen and care teams made a visible effort to accommodate personal food preferences and ensure nutritional needs were met, and families appreciated that visiting restrictions were not in place, allowing them to see their relatives freely.

For responsiveness, the service failed to meet people's needs in a timely manner due to severe staff shortages during morning routines. Residents frequently had to wait hours just to get out of bed, and opportunities for showers or baths were frequently missed because staff simply did not have the time. Care records were also not always completed accurately, which heightened risks given how many temporary agency workers were unfamiliar with individual routines.

Finally, leadership and management oversight were major areas of concern, driven by a disconnect between staff and managers that fostered a negative, blame-oriented culture. Internal management failed to learn lessons from past incidents or address recurring complaints raised by families, leading to a lack of confidence in clinical governance. However, the provider acknowledged these failings immediately and has begun working with external agencies and an interim clinical lead to implement an action plan for improvement.
