What inspectors found

Orchard House is a care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to ten individuals with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder, some of whom may also have physical disabilities. This inspection report from February 2018 found that significant improvements have been made since the previous inspection, particularly in staff recruitment and organisational monitoring systems. The service is designed to promote independence and inclusion, enabling residents to live fulfilling lives. The report covers five key areas: safety, effectiveness of care, how caring the staff are, responsiveness to residents' needs, and the leadership of the service.

Regarding safety, the home has robust recruitment processes in place, ensuring all necessary checks are completed for staff before they begin working. Regular health and safety checks of the environment and equipment are conducted to maintain a safe living space. Fire safety systems are regularly tested, and staff and residents are involved in drills. Infection control procedures are followed, and there are sufficient staff on duty to ensure residents' needs are met without staff feeling rushed. Risk assessments for residents' care are thorough, with clear guidance for staff, and financial records are well-maintained to protect residents' money.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive appropriate training and regular supervision, equipping them with the skills needed to support residents effectively. The home works collaboratively with other agencies to ensure residents' healthcare needs are met, and specialist advice is sought when necessary. Residents are supported to maintain a healthy diet and are involved in meal preparation. Although there haven't been new admissions for some time, assessment processes are in place to ensure the service can meet potential residents' needs.

The caring aspect of the service is highlighted by residents' feedback, who describe staff as kind and attentive. Staff treat residents with respect, upholding their privacy and dignity while encouraging their independence. Residents are supported to make decisions about their care, with clear communication guidelines in place. Families are welcomed and involved in the lives of their loved ones at Orchard House.

In terms of how responsive the service is, care plans are personalised to individual choices and preferences and are regularly updated to reflect changing needs. Residents are encouraged to participate in activities of their choice, with access to the local community. Systems are in place to support residents with complaints, with a clear and accessible procedure available. Residents' end-of-life wishes are also discussed and recorded.

Finally, the leadership of the service is described as well-led, with both residents and staff expressing confidence in the management team. Organisational checks and audits are in place to monitor the quality of care. Feedback from relatives and other stakeholders is positive, reflecting the home's vision and values. The registered manager is supportive of the staff, fostering an open and transparent environment, and important events are notified to the CQC in a timely manner.
