What inspectors found

Orchid Woodlands is a residential care home in Atherton, Greater Manchester, registered to support up to 38 older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, mental health needs, physical disabilities, or sensory impairments. At the time of our inspection, 27 people were living at the home. Overall, the service needs to make several important improvements regarding its management, record-keeping, and daily routines, though residents and relatives remain generally positive about the care provided and the daily life within the home.

When it comes to safety, medicine management was not handled safely, including missing controlled drugs, unsafe storage of waste medications, and a lack of proper guidance for covert medicines. Safety checks were missed due to gaps in maintenance staffing, accident logs lacked necessary details, and the home lacked a proper safeguarding log. However, residents and relatives felt the home was safe and that enough staff were on duty, and the building itself was clean with effective infection control processes.

The effectiveness of the care also had mixed results. While staff training was monitored and the home followed legal frameworks regarding mental capacity, there was no kitchen suitable for cooking from scratch, meaning pre-prepared meals had to be heated up. Additionally, the building required significant redecoration and updating throughout, and agency staff did not receive a formal induction when starting at the home.

The home performed well in providing a caring environment. Residents and relatives praised the staff, describing them as kind, patient, and exceptionally helpful. Staff were observed treating people with genuine warmth, respecting their dignity by knocking on doors and asking for permission, and actively encouraging residents to maintain their independence wherever possible.

Regarding how responsive the service is, care plans varied in detail and there was no fixed activity schedule, leaving residents with inconsistent activities who expressed a desire to do more. While resident and relative meetings were not held regularly, feedback was gathered through annual surveys and questionnaires, and people knew how to raise a complaint if needed.

For leadership and governance, the management systems were not robust. Audits were not completed consistently, record-keeping was lacking in several areas—such as daily personal hygiene logs—and there were no regular meetings held for residents and their families to discuss the running of the home.
