This summary covers the findings of a recent inspection of Red Roof, a care home for individuals with learning disabilities. The inspection aimed to assess the quality of care and accommodation provided. The report generally highlights a positive environment where residents' independence and inclusion are actively promoted. It details the outcomes across five key areas, offering insights into the home's performance and areas of focus for ongoing improvement.
On safety, the home ensures residents feel secure, with staff well-versed in safeguarding procedures and confident in reporting concerns. Risks are managed without unnecessary restrictions, and medication is handled safely. However, two residents expressed that at times they felt more staff were needed to facilitate outings, an observation also noted by staff members who mentioned the need for additional support during specific situations and reduced staffing on weekends.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents generally appreciate the staff, who are knowledgeable about their needs and support them effectively. Nutritional needs are met, with residents having choices in their meals. The home adheres to the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, and staff demonstrate a good understanding of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). A minor gap in the recording of restraint use was noted, attributed to a recent change in documentation procedures and the manager's annual leave.
The caring aspect of the service is strong, with residents feeling comfortable and trusting of the staff. Staff are described as listening and spending time with residents, and their competence ensures needs are met. Residents' care plans are developed to reflect their support requirements and preferences, with opportunities for enjoyable activities that are regularly reviewed.
The service excels in being responsive, with a strong person-centred approach that aims to help each resident reach their full potential. Residents are encouraged to live independent lives, with their choices, independence, and inclusion actively promoted. Families are kept well-informed and involved in the care process.
Regarding how well-led the service is, effective quality assurance measures are in place to monitor care and plan improvements. Resident feedback is regularly sought and incorporated into changes and enhancements. The management team actively supports residents' activities and works alongside care staff, with an on-call system for when management is unavailable.
