Richard House Care Home's recent inspection report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) outlines areas where improvements are needed to ensure the highest standards of care. The report provides an overview of the service's performance across key areas, highlighting both strengths and areas for development. This summary aims to give families a clear understanding of the inspection findings to aid in their decision-making process.
On safety, the home has not always managed medicines securely, with some medications not consistently administered safely and documentation gaps identified. Recruitment procedures also require strengthening to ensure all necessary checks are completed before staff begin working with vulnerable individuals. While environmental safety checks are now being conducted, there were instances where areas requiring refurbishment and attention to hygiene were noted, particularly in bathrooms and toilets.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff training levels have improved, and a system for induction and supervision has been introduced. However, gaps in these processes were observed, and records did not always demonstrate that all new staff had received the necessary training. While care plans address individuals' needs and preferences, assessments and reviews have not consistently included people or their loved ones in the process. The home is effective in supporting residents with their nutrition and hydration, with positive feedback on the food and choices offered.
Regarding caring practices, the report notes that people and their relatives feel safe and that staff are attentive. Staff are trained in safeguarding and understand how to report concerns, with management responding appropriately. People are supported to maintain their independence and are assisted with their needs in a kind manner, though there was an observation about the inconsistent use of safety belts during transport within the home.
In relation to how responsive the service is, residents' nutrition and hydration needs are consistently met, and staff support people to have maximum choice and control over their lives. The home has adapted well to changing guidance regarding visits, ensuring safe arrangements for friends and family. People's personal emergency evacuation plans are in place, outlining their specific support needs.
Concerning leadership and management, the provider has not always ensured sufficient oversight of auditing processes, and audits have not always identified the concerns found during the inspection. While the deputy manager was responsive and acted quickly on feedback, there have been multiple and repeated breaches of regulations found over time. The registered manager has good relationships with external organisations, which is beneficial for coordinated care. Despite improvements in some areas, the service continues to require improvement overall, with ongoing focus needed on robust governance and ensuring all care practices consistently meet regulatory standards.
