Inspected 19 June 2023 · report published 19 August 2023What inspectors found
Stable Steps Care Centre in Stockport provides residential nursing and dementia care for up to 50 adults across two floors, featuring single and shared rooms alongside communal lounges and dining areas. The latest CQC inspection highlights that while the service has addressed some previous concerns, several important areas still require continued development and attention from the management team.
When it comes to safety, the home keeps the environment clean and manages basic equipment and maintenance checks appropriately. However, inspectors found ongoing issues with staff recruitment records, potential language and communication barriers among newer team members, and concerns about whether staffing levels are always sufficient to respond quickly to call bells or supervise communal areas.
Regarding effectiveness, people's needs are assessed, but care plans sometimes contain inconsistencies and lack accurate detail. Feedback from visiting professionals and families regarding staff training, skills, and how medical advice is consistently followed remains mixed, indicating that staff support and supervision need further improvement.
In terms of being caring, residents and their families shared mixed views about their daily experiences. Records did not always clearly show that people were actively involved in daily decisions, or that their personal independence and dignity were consistently prioritized by the staff supporting them.
On the responsive side, care is not always delivered in line with individual preferences, and some families feel that communication needs are not fully met. While formal complaints are addressed, verbal concerns are not always properly recorded, and some people lack confidence in raising issues or seeing them resolved.
Finally, leadership and oversight are actively evolving as the management team introduces new audit systems, care planning methods, and action plans. However, because these oversight measures are still newly implemented, their long-term impact on daily life and the overall culture of the home could not yet be fully measured during the inspection.
