What inspectors found

Ridgeway Manor Residential Care Home is a residential facility located in Oxted, Surrey, providing care for up to 43 older people, including those living with dementia, sensory impairments, and physical disabilities. At the time of our inspection, there were 20 residents living at the home. This report highlights several important areas requiring improvement, alongside notable positive aspects in daily care and family relationships.

Regarding safety, some aspects of care were not consistently managed safely. Inspectors found issues with medicine administration timing, overnight access to pain relief, and cleanliness of equipment. Furthermore, fire safety concerns, building maintenance issues, and a lack of proper adaptation for residents with dementia were identified, alongside the need to improve dietary and fluid safety practices.

In terms of effectiveness, the home followed the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, although some documentation and assessment records required better consistency. While residents generally enjoyed the food and had choices, meals requiring texture modification needed more attractive presentation and stricter adherence to specialist guidelines.

The care provided by staff was found to be kind, respectful, and person-centered. Residents and relatives praised the friendly, family-like atmosphere at the home and noted that staff treated people with dignity, respected their choices, and encouraged personal independence.

The service was responsive to individual needs, with care properly planned around personal preferences and daily choices. Residents had access to varied activities they enjoyed, and relatives felt well-informed and actively involved in care planning, with clear channels to raise any concerns.

Finally, regarding leadership and management, staff felt well-supported through inductions, ongoing training, and teamwork. However, internal quality assurance systems required strengthening to effectively monitor and address environmental, maintenance, and safety shortfalls across the service.
