What inspectors found

Roper House provides residential care for up to 27 adults, including people who are deaf, blind, or live with learning disabilities. The recent inspection highlights a welcoming environment where residents, including two individuals living more independently in adjoining flats, receive personalized support. The home features multiple communal areas and a large garden, and residents are actively involved in shaping their living space, such as choosing hallway paint colors and personalizing their own rooms.

When it comes to safety, the home protects residents through thorough risk assessments, well-maintained equipment, and robust recruitment checks, including regular agency staff who are already familiar with the service. Medicines are managed safely, and staff actively follow guidance to prevent over-medication. However, while infection control measures are strong, the service maintains constant vigilance through health declarations for visitors to protect residents effectively.

The care provided is highly effective, backed by staff trained in specific health needs like diabetes, epilepsy, and dysphagia. Residents have access to independent British Sign Language interpreters for medical appointments, and care plans meticulously detail individual communication and sensory needs. On the dining front, while staff encourage healthy choices for conditions like diabetes, some residents expressed a desire for takeaways or pub meals every day, which the home accommodates as often as possible rather than daily.

Residents experience compassionate and respectful treatment from a team that knows them well. Staff demonstrate genuine patience, giving residents time to process information and communicate comfortably. Privacy and dignity are actively preserved, highlighted by staff using special doorbells connected to room lights to announce themselves before entering, ensuring residents feel secure and respected in their personal space.

The service responds dynamically to changing needs, updating care plans promptly and involving families and advocates in best-interest meetings. Staff successfully support residents to pursue personal hobbies, access local day centers, and maintain community connections. Although some residents occasionally wish for lifestyle routines that aren't always feasible, the team continuously balances these personal preferences with practical care delivery and health guidelines.

Leadership at the home is organized and transparent, ensuring accidents and incidents lead to proactive changes. For instance, following a fall, the registered manager worked with a resident to relocate their bedroom closer to the lift to reduce future risks, with the resident's full permission. Overall, the management maintains a strong, person-centered culture where both residents and visiting relatives feel well-informed and supported.
