Inspected 28 March 2019 · report published 30 April 2019What inspectors found
Anvil House provides a supportive and homely environment for up to seven adults with learning and physical disabilities. Families praise the warm atmosphere and the genuine dedication of the staff team. While the home successfully promotes independence and community involvement, the inspection highlights a few areas requiring attention, such as ensuring communal spaces accommodate everyone's preferences equally and addressing mixed staff feedback regarding management approaches.
Residents are protected from avoidable harm through well-understood safeguarding procedures, thorough staff background checks, and detailed emergency evacuation plans. Medication is administered correctly, and the premises are kept clean with appropriate infection control measures in place.
Support is tailored to individual needs based on accurate care plans and proper legal frameworks for mental capacity. Residents enjoy a balanced diet of their choosing, have personalised bedrooms with sensory features, and are well-supported to access various healthcare professionals when their needs change.
The staff build strong, compassionate relationships with residents, using patience and non-verbal cues to communicate effectively. Residents are encouraged to make daily choices and maintain their independence by participating in household tasks like cooking and cleaning, while relatives feel actively included in care reviews.
Care delivery is well-organised, and residents frequently access community activities and outings tailored to their interests. However, the inspection noted a limitation in communal areas where a single resident's television preferences could restrict what others watch, a point the management agreed to review.
The leadership promotes a person-centred culture focused on residents' rights, choice, and opportunity, backed by regular internal audits and staff training. Although the manager is recognised for strong knowledge in supporting residents, staff expressed mixed feedback regarding performance management and support approaches.
