What inspectors found

St Dominics Residential Home in Kelvedon provides accommodation and personal care for up to 39 older people, including those living with dementia, set across two floors with spacious living areas and a large garden. Residents and their families consistently share positive feedback, expressing that they feel secure, happy, and well-supported by a kind and attentive team. The home focuses on maintaining a warm, person-centred environment where individuality and independence are actively encouraged. While the overall feedback and findings reflect a well-managed and comfortable setting, the service continually reviews its practices, documentation, and training standards to sustain its quality of care.

Residents live in a secure environment where risks are properly assessed, safety equipment is well-maintained, and regular fire drills take place. The home maintains appropriate staffing levels with a consistent team, and medicines are managed by trained staff who undergo regular competency checks and audits.

Care is delivered by knowledgeable staff who receive face-to-face training, complete national qualifications, and benefit from specialist education in dementia awareness and nutrition. The management team properly understands legal requirements regarding mental capacity and making decisions in residents' best interests.

Staff build warm, empathetic relationships with residents, respecting their personal routines, privacy, and dignity. Individuals are encouraged to maintain their independence, pursue their own daily preferences, and take part in regular religious services or family visits.

Care plans are detailed, regularly reviewed, and tailored to personal preferences, supported by three dedicated activities coordinators who arrange quizzes, games, and external entertainment. The service listens to feedback and complaints, and staff receive specialized training in end-of-life care in collaboration with a local hospice.

The management team maintains strong oversight through regular quality audits, safety checks, and daily visits from the provider. Staff feel well-supported by leadership through supervision and team meetings, and the home actively gathers feedback from residents, relatives, and health professionals through questionnaires and daily interactions.
