What inspectors found

This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of Henderson and Harvard, a care home for eight adults with learning disabilities and additional mobility or physical difficulties. The inspection team visited the home on 14 May 2018, following its recent purchase by a new provider. The report assesses the service across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness, and leadership. It highlights the home's commitment to promoting independence and inclusion for residents.

On safety, the home ensures that appropriate checks are conducted before staff begin their employment, and there are sufficient staff on duty to protect residents from harm. Robust risk assessments are in place to minimise health risks, and medication records are kept meticulously up to date.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive training to support residents' needs. The management demonstrates a strong understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring residents have maximum choice and control in their lives, supported in the least restrictive way possible.

The service is caring, with staff interacting with residents in an empathetic and kind manner, understanding individual preferences. Staff actively promote residents' independence by encouraging them to make informed decisions.

Regarding responsiveness, residents and their families are involved in care planning and reviews, with support plans regularly updated. The service actively supports residents to pursue their interests and engage in social activities, and complaints are addressed promptly and effectively.

Finally, on how well-led the service is, both staff and residents speak highly of the registered manager and provider, who are seen as supportive and dedicated. Systems are in place to monitor and maintain high-quality care, with regular reviews ensuring resident needs are consistently met.
