Inspected 11 April 2019 · report published 1 May 2019What inspectors found
Rowans is an adapted care home supporting up to eight adults with learning disabilities, offering a warm, family-style environment where residents are placed firmly at the center of daily life. Families consistently share glowing feedback about the compassionate atmosphere, noting that staff understand their loved ones exceptionally well and treat everyone with genuine dignity, respect, and deep personal insight.
When it comes to safety measures, the home maintains reliable safeguarding systems, thorough staff recruitment practices, and timely medication management, though inspectors noted that certain areas required attention. Specifically, the environment needed general decluttering and deep cleaning in a bathroom, while a garden fence panel and patio area also required upkeep. Furthermore, managers needed to better restrict access to an electrical cupboard and a cupboard containing hot pipes to minimize potential risks to residents.
Support and medical outcomes are handled effectively through tailored care plans and strong collaboration with external healthcare professionals, ensuring residents maintain a healthy and balanced diet suited to their personal choices. Although staff successfully followed legal mental capacity frameworks and involved families in decision-making, the management was reminded to promptly submit required legal notifications regarding liberty safeguards to the commission after the inspection took place.
The atmosphere throughout the home remains welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely caring, with staff building strong, natural rapports and treating residents with constant warmth. Team members demonstrate high levels of empathy, actively noticing small physical gestures and noises to ensure residents feel fully supported, reassured, and comfortable in their surroundings.
Communication needs are handled with great attention to detail, utilizing personalized care plans, visual aids, and specific signs to help residents express their preferences and engage in everyday household tasks. While no formal complaints had been raised since the previous inspection, the service maintains clear procedures and enjoys strong appreciation and positive feedback from visiting families.
The service benefits from clear, approachable leadership, with the registered manager maintaining regular quality audits and welcoming feedback from both staff and relatives. Strong community links and active partnerships with local general practitioners and healthcare consultants help ensure consistent oversight and a high standard of person-centred care.
