Inspected 19 December 2022 · report published 4 February 2023What inspectors found
Elmcroft Care Home provides personal and nursing care for older adults and people with dementia, as well as younger adults with physical or learning disabilities. At the time of our inspection, 42 people were living across the home's two units, Blythe and GNU. While the home has seen recent management changes and has detailed improvement plans in place, feedback from families and our findings indicate that the quality of care and oversight require significant improvement to ensure consistent standards across the service.
When it comes to safety, the home has been a primary focus for recent provider improvements, and staff are recruited safely. However, poor communication between management and staff led to inconsistencies in how risks were managed, and some safety incidents and bruising were not appropriately escalated or reported. While medication storage and certain clinical processes have improved following renovations and specialized support, stock discrepancies and oversight challenges with agency staff still need attention. Infection control measures are generally well-managed with ongoing investments in the physical environment, though mask-wearing among staff was not always consistent.
The service's approach to meeting individual needs is currently inconsistent and depends heavily on which staff are on duty. While some established staff and the activity coordinator provide meaningful engagement, many relatives reported that personal preferences around meals, daily routines, and clothing were frequently overlooked. Mealtimes lacked a sociable atmosphere, and some residents experienced long periods of isolation with minimal interaction from busy staff carrying out routine tasks. Although care plans and guidance documents are currently being revised to be more person-centred, further work is needed to ensure every resident receives tailored and compassionate support.
Regarding leadership, the service has experienced significant turnover, and a new manager has recently joined to oversee operations. Despite the provider having quality audits and improvement plans in place, these measures have not always been implemented in a timely manner. Staff morale was reported as low by some team members, and senior staff did not always communicate effectively or organize the shift efficiently. While steps are being taken through staff training and increased quality checks to foster a more open and supportive culture, governance and oversight require sustained effort to ensure lasting improvements.
