Inspected 13 December 2019 · report published 14 February 2020What inspectors found
This inspection report focuses on a small residential home in Guildford supporting up to four adults with learning disabilities or autism. At the time of the visit, three individuals lived in the house, experiencing a warm, relaxed, and domestic environment where staff do not wear uniforms, helping the property blend seamlessly into the quiet neighborhood. Relatives and healthcare professionals shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, highlighting compassionate staff who regularly go above and beyond expectations to ensure residents lead active, meaningful lives.
On the safety front, residents live in clean, well-maintained surroundings and benefit from a stable, properly vetted staff team trained to recognize and report abuse. However, medication storage required attention as medicines were kept in a kitchen cupboard without maximum temperature monitoring, and some risk assessments lacked precise details on how staff should mitigate specific hazards.
The approach to daily living and support is generally strong, with comprehensive health monitoring, active engagement with external medical professionals, and good involvement in meal preparation and household skills. Nevertheless, a legal oversight was noted regarding the Mental Capacity Act, as one resident's Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards authorization had expired without a timely renewal application being submitted.
The atmosphere among residents and staff is genuinely warm, friendly, and respectful, fostering strong personal connections. Relatives and visiting professionals consistently praised the genuine kindness, empathy, and respect shown by the team, who take the time to know each resident as an individual and encourage them to pursue their personal hobbies and independence.
Support is tailored well to individual routines, personal preferences, and community activities, enabling residents to maintain hobbies, build friendships, and make daily choices about their schedules. Yet, care plans were not always fully up to date, meaning staff occasionally lacked accurate written guidance regarding some evolving personal needs and preferences.
Leadership and management oversight showed mixed outcomes during the inspection. While the registered manager has actively collaborated with local authorities and quality improvement teams to introduce new audits and strengthen service standards, these internal checks failed to catch all the compliance issues identified by inspectors.
