This inspection report reflects the ongoing progress at Uplands Independent Hospital following previous serious concerns. The facility has successfully maintained earlier improvements and exited special measures, showing clear dedication from visible and approachable senior management. Positive developments include a cleaner environment, reduced reliance on agency staff, well-equipped clinical areas, and supportive, caring interactions between staff and patients who generally feel safe. However, significant work remains to fully embed a new rehabilitation model and address multiple operational and safety actions.
Regarding safety, the environment still has unaddressed risks such as ligature anchor points and missing nurse call alarms in some bedrooms, alongside laundry facilities lacking proper sluice functions.
The effectiveness of care is limited because care plans lack a strong focus on recovery and skill-building for community living, and staff occasionally administer medications without complete and up-to-date legal authorisation forms in place.
On the caring side, staff show genuine respect and kindness toward patients, and daily basic needs like dietary requirements are well met, though staff currently fail to actively seek formal feedback from families and carers.
The service performs strongly in being responsive to day-to-day needs, offering varied daily routines and recently opening a female-only lounge and new gym spaces, despite some community leave having to be cancelled due to staffing limits.
Finally, leadership and governance processes are still in the early stages of being introduced across all services, meaning management oversight is not yet fully effective, although a new hospital director has recently taken charge to ensure leadership continuity.
