Willow Health Limited

Willow Health is a Colchester care home adapted from a bungalow, providing accommodation and personal care for up to seven adults with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, or physical disabilities. On the days of our inspection, six residents were living at the service. The report highlights improvements across various areas of care delivery, noting positive relationships between long-term residents and staff, as well as a strong commitment from management to drive a more person-centred culture.

Regarding safety, potential risks were generally identified with guidance provided to staff, though some cleaning fluids were initially left accessible in the laundry room and paperwork like the gas safety certificate was not immediately available. Additionally, parts of the property showed wear and tear with cracked tiles and worn carpets that made cleaning harder, and staff application forms lacked full employment history space.

The service proved effective through thorough assessments, well-monitored weight and nutrition, and a strong training and induction program for staff, though some narrow doorways in the bungalow posed minor access challenges for wheelchair users.

Care was delivered compassionately, with staff demonstrating warm interactions, respecting privacy by knocking on doors, and using objects or pictures to help residents make independent daily choices.

The home was responsive to individual needs, featuring updated, detailed care plans, clear behavioral protocols to help staff de-escalate stressful situations, and accessible formats using symbols and pictures to support communication.

Management was viewed positively, with improved quality assurance processes, active learning from past incidents, and a registered manager successfully leading cultural change to enhance residents' overall wellbeing.
