Bickham House provides personal care for up to 26 older people in a large detached Victorian building with single occupancy rooms and attractive grounds. Families and residents praise the warm, family-like atmosphere and the dedicated team of staff. The recent inspection highlights strong management oversight, person-centred care, and a secure environment, alongside minor areas where ongoing updates and improvements are actively being implemented to further enhance daily life for everyone living there.
Residents and relatives consistently feel secure at the home, supported by staff who understand how to manage risks and report concerns properly. Safety checks on building equipment and fire systems are regularly carried out by professionals. While overall safety standards are high, work was already underway during the visit to raise the height of an upper staircase bannister and protective gloves in a public area were requested to be moved to improve safety further.
Care and treatment lead to positive outcomes, supported by thorough pre-admission assessments and a local GP who holds a weekly surgery at the home. Staff receive proper training and induction, and the spacious building easily accommodates people with early-stage dementia or mobility needs. The kitchen caters well to individual dietary requirements, and staff were actively experimenting with new ways to make soft diets look more appetising for residents who need them.
The staff team is widely described as kind, patient, and caring, successfully helping residents maintain their independence and personal preferences. Relationships with families are warmly encouraged, including special events like pop-up restaurants for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Staff consistently respect privacy by knocking on doors and ensuring doors are closed during personal care.
Care plans capture individual needs and daily preferences, supported by dementia-friendly signage and pictorial menus in communal areas, with plans already underway to further improve this visual signage. Residents enjoy a wide range of activities both inside the home and out in the local park, and complaints are handled properly in line with company policy. Compassionate end-of-life care is also available, with families closely and sensitively involved in planning wishes.
The home is actively managed by a registered and deputy manager who maintain regular supervision, appraisals, and team meetings for the staff. Comprehensive audits and health and safety monitoring systems are firmly in place to continuously evaluate and improve the quality of service provided.
