Handsworth is a residential care home located in Trafford, Greater Manchester, providing accommodation and personal care for up to 43 older people. Based on the latest inspection, the home offers a welcoming and traditional environment with well-maintained outdoor spaces and a planned refurbishment program underway. Residents and their families share overwhelmingly positive feedback about the quality of life, compassionate support, and the warm atmosphere fostered by a dedicated team.
Residents are thoroughly protected from avoidable harm, supported by clear safeguarding policies and staff who understand their responsibilities. Safety is reinforced through personalised risk assessments, regular equipment maintenance, and safe recruitment practices including background checks. Medicines are managed properly, and the home maintains high standards of cleanliness, holding a top food hygiene rating. However, the report notes that an NHS community infection control team identified areas for improvement in May 2018, though management was confident these had been addressed.
Care outcomes are consistently positive, backed by a well-trained staff team that undergoes comprehensive inductions and regular supervision. Mealtimes are treated as pleasant social occasions offering varied, home-cooked food and flexible choices, alongside accessible hydration stations. The management strictly adheres to the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring that any restrictions on liberty are properly authorised and that decisions are made in residents' best interests in consultation with their families.
The service provides exceptional, compassionate support that treats residents as unique individuals. Staff build warm, trusting relationships with residents and their families, ensuring that personal identities, backgrounds, and human rights are deeply respected. The home actively celebrates diversity, including tailored inclusivity initiatives for LGBT residents and cultural events like Chinese New Year. A unique feature of the home is the presence of a dedicated Chaplain who offers pastoral support and companionship to residents, relatives, and staff alike.
Care delivery is highly individualised, featuring detailed support plans that reflect residents' personal histories, preferences, and communication needs. An active activities program, supported by a full-time coordinator and the Chaplain, provides meaningful engagement, hobbies, and special events tailored to residents' physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
The management team is described as highly effective, leading by example and fostering an open, transparent culture of continuous learning. Although the registered manager was on long-term leave during the inspection, the deputy manager and area support manager successfully ran the home day-to-day, meeting all legal requirements and maintaining strong partnership working.
