What inspectors found

Bruce Lodge in Stockport provides personal care and accommodation for up to 66 older people, including individuals living with dementia and those needing short-term post-hospital care. Overall, families and residents experience a welcoming environment supported by a dedicated, permanent staff team. While the home demonstrates strong standards across daily operations and resident support, recent inspectors identified specific operational areas requiring attention to ensure consistent quality and safety for everyone living there.

The home maintains a secure environment with properly vetted staff and well-managed risks, though inspectors noted that drink thickeners were occasionally left unsecured in unattended areas. Medicines are generally handled safely, and emergency procedures are in place, though some minor record discrepancies and occasional issues with tied-up emergency pull cords were addressed during the visit.

Residents receive effective support with nutrition and healthcare, with a GP visiting weekly and prompt referrals made to specialists when needs change. However, inspectors found that residents staying in their rooms did not always have continuous access to drinking water, and routine checks indicated that oral hygiene support was sometimes missed.

Residents consistently describe the care team as kind, friendly, and respectful of their independence and personal history. Staff successfully support people to make their own choices and maintain their dignity, though during busy periods on certain units, residents did not always receive the individual attention and choices they needed during mealtimes.

Care plans reflect individual backgrounds and preferences, and staff respect people's privacy and dignity. However, inspectors recommended that the home pay closer attention to residents' preferences regarding the gender of the staff supporting their personal care.

Leadership and overall quality oversight require ongoing improvement. While the registered manager maintains good relationships with local authorities and health teams, inspectors noted that internal monitoring systems need to be more robust to catch issues like occasional unpleasant odours in some rooms and areas needing extra hand-washing facilities.
