Inspected 18 December 2019 · report published 21 January 2020What inspectors found
Crann Mor Nursing Home is a care facility offering personal and nursing care for up to 24 residents. This report summarises findings from a recent inspection, aiming to provide families with insight into the home's performance across key areas of care.
In terms of safety, while residents felt secure and staff were found to be recruited safely with appropriate checks in place, there are areas for improvement. Some radiators were uncovered, and risk assessments for water temperature monitoring and recording were not consistently completed to the highest standard. The home is also working to address areas of wear and redecoration.
Regarding effectiveness, care and support were found to consistently achieve good outcomes, reflecting residents' feedback. However, there were instances where consent for care and photographs was obtained from relatives without clear legal authority, and a lack of documented capacity assessments in some cases, such as covert medication administration. Staff training is being reviewed to ensure alignment with the Care Certificate.
The care provided is characterised by kindness and compassion, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Staff build good relationships with residents, and a positive, humorous dynamic was observed. Residents' healthcare needs are well-identified and met through collaboration with various healthcare professionals, ensuring their dignity and independence are promoted.
The service is responsive to residents' needs, with personalised care plans that are regularly reviewed and updated. Residents and their relatives feel involved in these reviews and well-informed. Communication needs are also identified and met, ensuring residents can express their views and are supported to maintain relationships and interests.
However, the leadership and management of the home require improvement. While many systems are in place to monitor service quality, these had not identified all shortcomings. The provider has acknowledged this and is implementing changes, including ensuring all required notifications are made to regulatory bodies and strengthening audit processes.
