Sheerwater House

Sheerwater House is a residential care home providing support for up to 20 older people and individuals living with dementia. At the time of this inspection in October 2021, there were 14 people living at the home. Families looking for a welcoming and supportive environment will find a place where staff build close, warm relationships with residents, creating a genuine family atmosphere. While significant progress has been made since the previous inspection, particularly in dementia care and management oversight, the home is still working on certain aspects of daily life to ensure every resident consistently has a stimulating experience.

When it comes to infection control and safety measures, the home demonstrates robust practices to keep residents protected. The inspectors found the provider was fully prepared in managing and preventing infection outbreaks, effectively handling visitors, social distancing, admissions, and the use of personal protective equipment.

The daily life and activities aspect of the home showed mixed results and remains an area in need of further development. While care plans are deeply personalised and staff excel at managing dementia-related distress through creative methods like memory boxes and a garden bus station, some residents noted a lack of engaging daily activities. Staff approaches to activities were at times inconsistent, and although management responded immediately by adding this to their improvement plan, more consistent stimulation is needed for everyone.

Support and medical care at the home are delivered effectively through well-tailored care plans and strong collaboration with outside professionals. Staff understand individual communication needs, adapting well to sensory impairments or language changes, and they support residents to maintain maximum choice and control over their daily routines.

Residents are treated with notable warmth, respect, and dignity by a staff team that families frequently praise for going above and beyond. People feel actively involved in decisions about their care, and birthdays and personal milestones are celebrated with great attention to detail to make individuals feel truly special.

The management and leadership of the home ensure a transparent, open, and well-run environment where continuous learning is embraced. The registered manager maintains thorough audits across all key areas and acts promptly on any feedback, fostering strong confidence among relatives who feel fully informed and involved in the service.
