What inspectors found

Eaton Lodge Nursing Home is a care home that offers both personal and nursing care for up to 24 older people, some of whom may be living with dementia. This report details findings from a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection assessed key areas to ensure the well-being and quality of care provided to residents. Overall, the service has made significant improvements since the last inspection, demonstrating a commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for its residents.

On safety, the home has robust systems in place to protect residents from abuse and discrimination, with staff well-trained to identify and report concerns. Risks to residents' health and welfare are thoroughly assessed, and care plans are now comprehensive, detailing individual preferences and choices. Medicines are managed safely, and adequate staffing levels, including consistent agency staff, ensure residents receive the support they need. The environment is clean and hygienic, with staff adhering to all necessary infection control guidance.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are now being met through good organisation and delivery, a notable improvement from the previous inspection. Care plans have been updated to accurately reflect residents' routines, preferences, and choices, ensuring care is personalised. Communication needs are met with information provided in accessible formats, and residents are supported to maintain relationships with family and friends. The service also plans for end-of-life care, respecting residents' wishes.

Regarding caring aspects, residents reported feeling safe and well-supported by kind and caring staff who understood how to protect them. Staff were noted to know residents well, which contributed to a person-centred approach to care. Residents indicated they felt safe and that staff assisted them with their anxieties and stress.

In terms of responsiveness, the service has significantly improved in meeting residents' needs through better organisation. Care plans now contain detailed information about residents' choices and preferences, ensuring their routines are maintained. Residents are provided with information in ways they can understand, and efforts are being made to re-establish communication tools like tablets for residents to connect with loved ones. The service also supports residents in maintaining their independence and pursuing their interests.

Finally, on being well-led, the home now has a new, experienced manager who is in the process of registering with the CQC. Leadership promotes a positive, person-centred culture, with staff feeling supported and confident in management. The provider demonstrates good governance, with regular audits and an action plan in place to address identified shortfalls. While communication with relatives experienced some disruption due to management changes, the new manager is actively addressing this and working to maintain open and honest communication. Residents are involved in developing their care plans, and plans are underway to reintroduce resident meetings and further develop activities.
