Frintondene Care Home is a small residential home located near the sea front, providing accommodation and personal care for up to eight older individuals, including some living with early dementia. During the inspection, the home was supporting six residents. Overall, the service provides a kind, supportive, and person-centered environment where residents feel safe, well-fed, and genuinely cared for by a motivated staff team, though certain operational and administrative areas have been highlighted for future growth.
When it comes to safety, residents felt secure and were protected from avoidable harm by staff trained in safeguarding. While safety monitoring and maintenance were generally robust, inspectors noted that routine water testing identified legionella species, which prompted the provider to carry out further remedial work and await follow-up tests. Additionally, personal emergency evacuation plans were not initially in place for residents, though management addressed this immediately upon being notified.
The care provided was proven to be effective in achieving positive outcomes for residents. Staff conducted thorough pre-admission assessments and worked well with external health professionals to coordinate timely medical care. However, records indicated that some staff members were behind on their refresher training due to the recent retirement of their previous trainer, though management was actively sourcing a replacement to ensure continuous adherence to best practice.
The atmosphere within the home was exceptionally caring, with staff demonstrating a deep understanding of residents' personal histories, preferences, and daily routines. Staff treated individuals with genuine warmth, respect, and compassion, successfully supporting them to maintain their personal independence. Inspectors noted a minor privacy oversight regarding a newly installed shower room lacking a lock, which the registered manager promptly arranged to have fitted.
The service proved to be highly responsive to individual needs, offering flexible care and tailored support that respected personal choices and routines. Staff actively encouraged residents to maintain important personal relationships and supported visits from family and friends. To prevent social isolation—particularly for those living with early dementia—inspectors recommended further supporting staff in identifying and introducing new stimulating group activities to enhance resident wellbeing.
Leadership and management systems required some improvement, specifically regarding the provider's internal quality assurance and keeping updated with national good practice guidance by networking with other services. Despite this administrative recommendation, residents and staff consistently reported feeling supported by a visible and approachable management team, reflecting a strong day-to-day commitment to the home's community.
