This inspection report for Kitnocks House by the Care Quality Commission provides an overview of the care provided to 63 residents with complex needs, including dementia, mental health conditions, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities. The report examines five key areas: Safety, Effectiveness, Care, Responsiveness, and Leadership. Overall, the inspection found that the service was well-managed and provided good quality care. However, it also identified specific areas for improvement to further enhance the resident experience and operational efficiency.
In terms of safety, residents received their medicines as needed, and the home was implementing a new electronic system for medication management. While safe storage and administration processes were in place, there were instances where these were not consistently followed, particularly concerning medicine storage. The report notes that staffing levels were generally observed to be safe, with staff appearing unhurried, although some relatives and staff expressed concerns about continuity due to agency use. Safeguarding procedures were robust, and staff received regular training.
Regarding effectiveness, care plans and risk assessments were in place to support residents, and staff were trained to manage risks such as falls and nutritional needs. The home also had emergency preparedness plans, including business continuity and personal evacuation plans. The service operated within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring residents' rights were upheld.
In the area of caring, residents were supported to maintain contact with their families, and visits were facilitated according to guidance. However, some families felt that the visitor booking system could be improved to allow for more flexible visiting times. Feedback from staff indicated that while most felt supported and valued, some desired better communication from management.
Concerning responsiveness, the home had systems in place to monitor the quality of care and make improvements. Accidents and incidents were analysed to identify trends and positive outcomes were achieved through implemented changes, such as the addition of sensor mats. The provider was proactive in addressing challenges, such as staff recruitment, by implementing various initiatives, including a staff bus route.
Finally, on being well-led, the management team demonstrated an open and transparent approach, promoting a positive and inclusive culture. While a new management team had implemented significant changes to improve the home's robustness, some staff felt communication could be enhanced. The provider was actively working to improve staff morale and had plans to develop staff through training and career pathways. The report highlights that the management was aware of challenges and actively working to address them.
