Inspected 14 July 2022 · report published 21 September 2022What inspectors found
This CQC inspection report for Loganberry Lodge provides an overview of the service's performance across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. The report details the findings from an inspection conducted on July 6, 2022. It aims to inform families about the quality of care and support provided at the home, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement to aid in decision-making for potential residents.
Regarding safety, the service was found to be safe, with robust recruitment practices and established systems to protect residents from abuse. While care plans and risk assessments were in place, there was a need for further analysis of safeguarding incidents to better learn from them and prevent recurrence. Immediate action was taken by the manager to address environmental issues related to infection control.
On how effective the care is, the service requires improvement. While staff are trained and work hard to meet needs, mixed feedback on food quality and variety was noted. Issues with meal service and communal space meant some residents ate in their rooms, and a period without garden access due to a damaged fence limited outdoor opportunities. Some record inconsistencies were identified but promptly rectified.
In terms of caring, staff were described as kind and compassionate, with residents and relatives expressing that they felt safe and well-looked after. However, a recurring theme was the feeling that staff were sometimes overstretched due to staffing levels, impacting their ability to spend quality time with residents.
The service's responsiveness requires improvement. While policies support residents' choice and control, the size of the service was noted as not aligning with best practice for accommodating individuals with learning disabilities, although no new admissions of this nature are planned. Immediate action was taken to reinstate signage that had been removed during renovations.
Finally, in how well-led the service is, there were positive aspects regarding management's approachability and communication. However, some identified issues had not been previously addressed or resolved, and systems needed further development to demonstrate sustained improvements. While the service collaborates well with external professionals, further development is needed in processes to track and demonstrate the impact of feedback and analysis on service enhancement.
