What inspectors found

Marula Lodge provides accommodation, personal care, and nursing care for up to 42 people, many of whom live with dementia, neurological conditions, or physical disabilities. Following a previous inspection that resulted in serious concerns, the service has made significant progress and resolved all previous regulatory breaches. The home now offers a much more supportive, well-organized environment where residents feel safe, well-nourished, and treated with genuine kindness by a dedicated team.

When looking at safety, residents and relatives generally feel secure, and staff understand how to manage individual risks and administer medications properly. However, inspectors noted that in one of the home's two units, staff were not always visibly present in communal areas to monitor residents closely, a point raised by some family members and addressed by management during the visit.

The home excels in delivering effective care, with a greatly improved physical environment featuring natural daylight, personalized bedrooms, and clear signage. Staff receive thorough inductions, targeted training, and proper supervision, ensuring they can appropriately support individuals with complex needs while strictly following legal frameworks regarding consent and mental capacity.

The caring aspect of the service shines through positive, respectful daily interactions between staff and residents. Relatives consistently described the care team as warm and attentive, noting that staff take time to reassure residents and protect their dignity and personal well-being.

The service responds well to individual needs by planning slow and steady admissions, accommodating personal routines, and managing dietary requirements carefully. Care plans are tailored to ensure that personal preferences and health needs are properly understood and met.

Leadership at the home is strong and visible, fostering a person-centred culture where staff feel supported and valued. Management actively listens to feedback from families and healthcare professionals, investigates incidents thoroughly to drive improvements, and maintains robust quality assurance systems.
