This report details the findings of an inspection at Richmond House, a care home providing accommodation and nursing support. The inspection aimed to assess the quality of care and ensure regulatory requirements were met. Overall, the service was found to be well-regarded, with positive feedback received from residents, relatives, and staff. The leadership and management were particularly highlighted for their exceptional effectiveness.
On safety, residents felt secure and protected from harm, supported by staff who understood safeguarding procedures. Robust checks were in place during recruitment, and regular maintenance ensured the premises and equipment were safe. Staffing levels were deemed sufficient to meet residents' needs, and medication was administered and stored securely. Processes were in place to monitor and learn from accidents and incidents.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' outcomes were consistently good, with support provided in line with best practices and legal guidance. Staff received comprehensive training, including specialized areas, and regular supervisions fostered professional development. Residents and their families were involved in care planning and expressed satisfaction with the food and hydration provided, with modifications made for specific dietary needs. The home also facilitated access to external healthcare services. A minor point for improvement involved making resident bedrooms easier to identify by displaying names and photographs on doors.
Regarding caring practices, residents and their relatives consistently praised staff for their kindness, compassion, and respectful approach. Staff were observed to form positive relationships, engaging residents in conversation and providing attentive care. Residents appeared well-groomed, with attention paid to personal care. The home actively promoted equality, diversity, and inclusion, and residents were involved in decisions about their care and the home's environment.
In terms of responsiveness, the home provided a range of activities both within and outside the home, catering to residents' interests. Complaints were handled appropriately, and compliments were noted. Residents were supported to express their views and make choices about their care, with mechanisms in place to ensure their involvement. The home also offered intermediate care services to support recovery and independence.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, the leadership and management were exceptionally effective. The home and its registered manager had received awards recognizing their outstanding leadership, particularly in end-of-life care. Staff felt well-supported, and the home was involved in local pilot initiatives. Feedback from all stakeholders was overwhelmingly positive regarding management and leadership.
